One of these flew into our kitchen...

This is a Piliated Woodpecker (I did not take this photo) It's our favorite. Probably because it's the largetst woodpecker in North America. Almost the size of a crow. They have a funny call that sounds like a laugh, kinda like a kukabura (not spelled correctly) They're usually very shy. It's usually hard to see them, even if it sounds like they're in a tree above you. Yesterday, one flew through our open garage, into the kitchen. It could probably see thru the garage, out to the other side of the house through the kitchen windows and thought it could take a short cut. Dan was in the kitchen doing dishes -yes, he even does dishes - when he heard a "wham!". He looked over and it had flown into the screen on the window. It's bill put a hole in the screen the size of a nickel. Dan yelled at April to get out so she wouldn't scare it, then trapped it in the window, ran out side and pulled the screen off so it could fly away. He said it fell on the deck stunned, then got up and flew away. I think it's actually funny. Here this bird was trying to make a shortcut and slammed into the screen. Hoping no other birds saw him.
